Before you buy
Choose a vehicle that is fit for purpose and provides the rider and any passengers with the greatest level of safety for each task.
Choose the right vehicle for the job
Find the best vehicle option for your farm – it may not be a quad bike.
Some things to think about are:
- What will the vehicle be used for? Are you mustering stock, spraying, moving tools and equipment?
- Who needs to use the vehicle?
- Will you need to carry passengers?
- Do you need to carry or tow a load?
- What type of terrain will you be driving over?
Alternatives to quad bikes include side-by-side vehicles, small utility vehicles, four wheel drives, small trucks, small farm tractors, or motorcycles.
Robert Hood, a farmer from Meadow Flat, talks about his near-fatal quad bike incident. He now uses an SSV. [2:18 minutes]
Before you buy a farm vehicle
- Use the farm vehicle checklist to see if a quad bike is the right vehicle for you.
- Talk to your dealer about the terrain and conditions of your property, and what tasks you will be carrying out.
- If you are buying a quad bike, look out for the requirements in the Quad Bike Safety Standard.
Quad bike safety standard
To help protect quad bike users the Australian Government has introduced the Consumer Goods (Quad Bikes) Safety Standard 2019. The Standard sets out the requirements for new quad bikes and imported second-hand quad bikes. Find out more
