Helmets and PPE
Always wear a helmet while riding a quad bike, SSV or motorbike. Wearing a helmet reduces the risk of a traumatic head injury in a farm vehicle incident.
Your helmet should:
- fit well
- be securely fastened
- be kept in good condition
A poor fitting or loose helmet may become dislodged in an incident and offer no protection.
There are a range of helmets suitable for on-farm use that are lightweight, ventilated, and provide sun protection.
Compliant helmets include:
- AS/NZS 1698:2006 – Protective helmets for vehicle users
- UNECE22.05 – Protective helmets and their visors for drivers and passengers of motor cycles and mopeds
- NZS 8600:2002 – All-terrain vehicle helmets*
*Helmets compliant with the New Zealand Standard 8600:2002 are available for use on quad bikes at low speed (not exceeding 30 kilometres per hour).
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
All operators should also wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when operating a quad bike and side-by-side vehicle.
- Eye protection
- Gloves
- Sturdy footwear
- Hearing protection
- Sun protection
- Appropriate clothing – arms and legs should be covered
Follow the instructions in the owner's manual.
