A code of practice, ‘Managing risks in stevedoring’, has been developed by Safe Work Australia to address the high rate of accidents and injuries in the stevedoring industry, where the rate of serious incidents is more than three times the average rate of all industries.
Stevedoring involves activities directly connected with loading or unloading a ship’s cargo, stacking and storing cargo on a wharf and receiving and delivering cargo within a terminal or facility.
It is expected the code will improve safety standards by providing businesses with practical guidance on how to comply with their current duties under the work health and safety laws.
The code of practice commenced in NSW on 15 December 2017.
